How to Know If You're Called to Ifa Priesthood (Beyond Ego)

In this age of visibility and digital declarations, it’s easy to mistake desire for destiny. But priesthood in the sacred lineage of Ifa is not about popularity or performance. It is not a costume, a caption, or a crown. It is a covenant.

In the Ifa tradition, we call our priests Babalawo (father of secrets) and Iyanifa (mother of secrets). These titles are not claimed they are earned, through spiritual preparation, ancestral alignment, and divine confirmation.

A true calling doesn’t just touch your thoughts it disturbs your spirit.

🌀 Signs You Are Being Called:

There are certain patterns that begin to appear long before initiation:

• Your dreams shift you begin to see shrines, ancestors, rivers, rituals, or receive messages from the unseen.

• You feel pulled away from ordinary life things that once fulfilled you no longer bring peace.

• You begin to hear without hearing, Orunmila answers your questions before your mouth opens.

It is subtle but undeniable. Something within you stirs, aches, and returns over and over until you answer.

⚖️ The Weight of the Calling: "Ifa priesthood calling"

Being called does not mean you are ready.

Being chosen does not mean you are prepared.

Ifa will test your ego, your patience, your sacrifice, and your silence.

True Ifa priesthood calling requires cleansing, discipline, humility, and a willingness to serve when it’s inconvenient even thankless. It requires you to become a vessel, not a brand.

📿 Odu Quote (Ogunda Ose):

“Ẹni tó bá fẹ́ jẹ́ ọ̀rìṣà, kò gbọdọ̀ fi gbogbo ẹnu sọ̀rọ̀.”

*The one who wishes to serve the divine must learn silence first.*

— Odu Ifa: Ogunda Ose

In Ogunda Ose, we learn that those who are destined to carry sacred authority must first become masters of patience, wisdom, and internal truth. Ifa warns against rushing ahead of one's own readiness.

🧭 Ego vs. Ori:

Ego wants to be seen.

Ori wants to be aligned.

Ego will wear the crown before the head is steady.

Ori waits for the exact moment it is deserved.

Priesthood is not the goal alignment is. Priesthood is the consequence of listening deeply, walking honorably, and serving with clarity.

🌿 Final Reflection:

If you're asking yourself whether you’re called to be a priest or priestess, don’t just look for signs ask your Ori. Sit in stillness. Make the offering. Listen in humility. And when the time is right, the path will open.

Because when Ifa truly calls you, ignoring that call will cost you your peace and perhaps

your destiny.

One this I love about this article is the differentiation between wanting to be called, being called but being hesitant, and being called and being defiant and full on resistant.
